South Africa-based Malawian athlete Jimmy Bonjesi has been named Whalers Athletics Club’s Best Male Athlete and Athlete of-the Year 2016.
Bonjesi was rewarded for his outstanding performance last year when he helped Whalers Club break records of several races.
“On top of the trophy, I also received six certificates of recognition for my exploits in different athletics field,” he said.
“I am very proud of my achievement. I am the best athlete as I have also beaten [broken] two club records in 5km time trial and Cape Town Marathon.”
Bonjesi said his mission was to represent Malawi in international competitions.
“This will encourage other local athletes in my country. We have good athletes but lack of support and exposure are pulling them down,” said the former amateur footballer.
Bonjesi has set his sights on the Sanlam Cape Town race scheduled for September.
