The government has expressed ignorance over Football Association of Malawi’s (Fam) announcement that the Flames will have an expatriate coach by mid-April.
In a press release issued on Monday, Fam General Secretary, Alfred Gunda, stated that the recruitment of an expatriate coach was being expedited ahead of the Flames qualifying matches for the African Nations Championship (Chan).
But Ministry of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development spokesperson, Simon Mbvundula, said the government made its position clear on the recruitment of the foreign trainer.
“We did not budget for an expatriate coach in this financial year. We can only afford a local national coach. That is what we told Fam in response to the issue of employing a foreign coach,” Mbvundula said.
Gunda declined to give details on the matter but only said Fam had prepared documents to be presented to the government.
Sports Minister, Henry Mussa, failed to meet Fam last week to appreciate Fam’s earlier decision of pulling out of Africa Cup of Nations and Chan tournaments.
Eventually, the association u-turned and announced that the Flames will compete in the continental events after Mussa pledged that the government would release funds.
