Under –12 and 15 football and netball finals for Limbe Leaf Trophy takes place on Saturday at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe, where eight teams will battle it out for honours.
Limbe Leaf Tobacco Company Limited has been sponsoring the tournament for 36 years, producing big names such as Jafali Chande (Be Forward Wanderers), Pilirani Zonda (Nyasa Big Bullets) and Lucky Malata (Silver Strikers).
Limbe Leaf Legal and Corporate Affairs Director, Febbie Chikungwa, said all was set for the finals.
She said 1590 teams from Lilongwe urban and rural primary schools participated this year, culminating into the eight finalists namely Chiwoko, Mphandula, Mchesi, Tsabango Boys, Tsabango Girls, Nankhaka, Kalambo and Balang’ombe.
“Limbe Leaf believes that sports can change people’s lives. Whether as a participant or a spectator, people engage in sports in such a manner that it can make a huge difference to health and lifestyles,” she explained.
“In addition, as a tobacco company, we understand the importance of keeping our youth continuously engaged and away from child labour. This year’s tournament has run from September, 2015. We believe that the children have been kept engaged, motivated and have most importantly, been kept away from child labour.”
Additionally, she said teams also receive sports equipment and educational materials such as school bags, pens, pencils and mathematical sets.
Kabwabwa Primary School are the defending champions of the Under-15 football trophy.
In netball, Tsabango Primary School will defend the Under-12 trophy, whereas Kalambo Primary School is the holders of the Under-15 trophy.
Limbe Leaf has pumped K 11 million into the tournament
