TNM has sponsored the Cape Maclear Triathlon, a sporting event on the shores of Lake Malawi, to the tune of K11 million.

Announcing the sponsorship, TNM Chief Commercial Officer, Dan Makata, said they felt duty-bound to be part of the ground-breaking event that seeks to uplift the less privileged and also promote the country’s tourism.

Mizu Foundation will host the event from August 26 to 28.

“It is exciting to note that in future, Mizu Foundation targets at growing the triathlon to a level where it attracts international athletes. This will help sell Malawi’s tourism to the outside world,” Makata said.

Mizu founder, Jam Kaunda, said his organisation expects athletes, including expatriates, to participate in the event.

“And in the years to come, we will be aggressive in pushing for international athletes to come and compete while enjoying the beauty that is Lake Malawi. We want to make this an annual event,” Kaunda said.

Kaunda said the 0.7km swim along the shores, followed by an undulating 18km cycle through the hills of the Lake Malawi National Park, and the 4.5km run through the village and the park, is sure to provide excitement to the participants.

The foundation has partnered the Ministry of Sports and Culture, and Ministry of Information, Tourism and Civic Education in the organisation of the event.

Proceeds from the event will go towards charitable causes.
