The Presidential Cup final between Moyale Barracks and Nyasa Big Bullets will be curtain-raised by a Presidential Women’s cup game on July 16 at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe.
National Women Football Association (NWFA) President, Severia Chalira, confirmed on Thursday that the curtain-raiser is meant to give exposure to women’s footballers.
“We want football fans to appreciate women’s football in the country.
In recent years, the standards of women football have improved greatly and we are optimistic that fans will not be disappointed when watching the girls on the pitch,” Chalira said.
DD Sunshine, Super Dynamos and Blantyre Zero have qualified for the semifinals after emerging champions in the Central, Northern and Southern regions, respectively.
Skippers have also made it into the semifinals as best losers.
The draw for the semifinals will be conducted on Thursday evening with games scheduled for Friday in Lilongwe at a venue yet to be announced.
The champions in the women’s Presidential Cup will walk away with K1.5 million, medals plus a trophy, with the runners-up and third-placed team pocketing K500, 000 and K300, 000, respectively.
In the men’s Presidential Cup, Bullets reached the final after beating Mafco 3-0 at Kamuzu Stadium, whereas Moyale knocked out Be Forward Wanderers 1-0 at Mzuzu Stadium.
The two teams will be meeting for the second time in the cup final since 2012. Bullets won the previous final, courtesy of Gabadinho Mhango’s wonder goal at Civo Stadium.
