Former Lawn Tennis Association of Malawi (LTAM) president, Titani Muwalo, risks facing legal action after failing to reimburse money to the association.
Muwalo was slapped with an indefinite suspension in May for allegedly misappropriating about K3.9 million. He was given up to June 13 2016 to repay the money.
LTAM General Secretary, Stan Kaunda, said they were considering legal action against Muwalo who borrowed the K3.9 million from the Malawi National Council of Sports.
He borrowed the money on the understanding that it would be repaid once the association’s sponsor, Puma Energy, released a promised equivalent amount. Puma released the money but Muwalo did not refund the council.
“The money doesn’t belong to us, but to government. We are left with no choice but to seek legal action. We need to clear our image to impress all stakeholders,” he said.
Muwalo, who earlier indicated that he would pay back the money, said Kaunda was better placed to comment on the matter.
“The commitment has always been there. I can’t fight against the cause which I have been promoting all along,” he said
Muwalo claims to have used the money to pay salaries for tennis coaches and also travel expenses for youngster Linda Msiska to South Africa.
Director of Public Affairs at the Office of President and Cabinet, Grey Mang’anda, was named the association’s acting president following Muwalo’s suspension.
Mang’anda, who i s also the former Dean of Education and Media Studies at the Malawi Polytechnic, was serving in the current committee as an executive member.
