It will be a trying week for contestants in Miss Tourism and Miss Bikini competition set for tomorrow at Nkopola Lodge in Mangochi: One ambitious woman showcasing her skills on a bare stage with a big spotlight.
Her task is, through body language, to tell a story that tells it all: Who she is, what she wants and how she will get it by impressing the judges and, by extension, the audience, and what it means that she wants to emerge the winner and what it will mean when she gets, or does not get, what she wants.
In the end, the reality will sink in, for both victors and also-runs: It is just part of recreation.
To the organisers, though, victory may open winners’ doors to international exposure.
“[For example] Miss Tourism will represent Malawi at Miss Tourism International while Miss Bikini will represent Malawi at Miss Bantu Bikini. We have models from the cities of Mzuzu, Lilongwe, Zomba and Blantyre,” said Constance Thyangathyanga, spokesperson for Fashion and Music Festival, organisers of the events.
Thyangathyanga said activities start today, and will spill into Monday, making it an Easter weekend that spills into a weekday.
Thyangathyanga said Miss Bikini and Miss Tourism contestants will compete in different categories, including Intro: Black and White, Street Casual, Dinner, Beach Casual (bum shorts, mini skirts, short dresses), Tradition, Free Style, Swimming Costume and Bikini.
Up for grabs in the competition are such titles as Miss Smile, Miss Photogenic, Miss Confidence, Miss Deportment, Miss Personality, Miss Catwalk, Miss Intelligence, 2nd Princess, 1st Princess and Miss Bikini \ Miss Tourism.
The fixed programme is as follows: From 8am to 12 noon daily – Sports; from 12 noon to 2pm daily, cultural troupes; from 2pm to 4pm, Lake Malawi Fashion Weekend and Mr Muscle Man; from 4pm to 6pm on Saturday Miss Tourism and same time on Sunday it will be Miss Bikini; and, from 6pm till dawn, music will be on the menu.
