Golf coaching intensifies in Lilongwe

by

Malawi National Golf Team Coach, Chris Kachiguma, has embarked on junior golf coaching clinics at Lilongwe Golf Club (LGC) to develop the sport at the grassroots.

Kachiguma on Wednesday said the project was being implemented through the Golf Union of Malawi (GUoM).

“We started on a good note on Monday. We had 30 junior golfers on the first day whereas on the second day, over 40 golfers turned up. The turn up has been encouraging. We are targeting at least 50 golfers at the end of the clinics,” Kachiguma said.

He urged parents to encourage their children to learn how to play golf during school holidays.

“Instead of leaving kids at home to watch television, I am asking parents to send us more kids for training. It is better for them to come and learn how to play golf,” he added.

The youngsters are being drilled on the basics of golf every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

On the last day of the training, the junior golfers will compete in a mini-tournament.

Golf in Malawi is portrayed as a social sport mostly for the affluent.

The sport enjoys massive sponsorship.
