NRFA faction elects office bearers

Newly-formed Karonga, Rumphi and Chitipa (Karuchi) sub-regional football committee has gone ahead to break away from the Northern Region Football Association (NFRA) by electing office bearers.

The committee recently asked for independence from NRFA, arguing that the three districts were sidelined by the association.

The committee’s General Secretary, John Sinyangwe, said the executive has been elected to spearhead the committee’s dream.

Sinyangwe said the group has already introduced itself to district commissioners of all the districts and Paramount Chief Kyungu of Karonga.

“Whenever you are establishing a committee, it is always important to have leaders in place. The next thing we are going to do is to meet NRFA officials. They already know our grievances. We only need to introduce our committee to them,” he explained.

Sinyangwe said the committee has already put plans in place to sustain its operations in making the three districts independent of NRFA.

But NRFA General Secretary, Masiya Nyasulu, said the Karuchi committee cannot be entertained because it has hidden motives.

He warned that the Northern Region soccer governing body has powers to effect a ban on all officials spearheading the breakaway.

“In recent seasons, we have seen teams from these districts representing the region in the national league. In 2014 and 2016, we had Karonga United in the Super League. And this year we are talking of Chitipa United. These teams are from the same so-called Karuchi, yet they are saying we sideline them…what else are they looking for?” wondered Nyasulu.

But Sinyangwe said it is the NRFA that is running the game in the region with hidden motives as all top positions in the association are occupied by individuals residing in Mzuzu.

The Karuchi Sub-regional Committee has Msanje Ng’oma (Karonga) as chairperson, John Sinyangwe (Karonga) as General Secretary, Square Nyasulu (Rumphi) as Vice General Secretary and Evance Mvula (Chitipa) as Treasurer.
