Blantyre’s Genetrix Hockey Club have the talent, the will and the desire, unfortunately that alone is not enough to take them to Kenya for the Africa Cup of Club Championship.

Genetrix needed K15 million for air tickets if they were to make it to the eight-day championship, which kicks off today at City Park Stadium in Kenya.

Hockey Association of Malawi General Secretary, Chigo Thindwa, confirmed on Wednesday that the Malawi club champions will miss out on the biggest continental club event, which has pooled the continent’s elite 20 team.

The clubs have been drawn from countries such as Mozambique, Zambia, Ghana, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Egypt.

“We did inform the organisers that we won’t take part. However, the national team will resume training this weekend ahead of its trip to Tanzania to participate in an international competition [President Cup],” Thindwa added.

Despite Genetrix’s failed trip, Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) Fixtures’ Secretary, Jane Nyamogo, told the press in the East African nation that she was expecting Malawi’s representative at the event.

Nonetheless the stage is set for the event with eyes on teams such as the men’s defending champions, Eastern Company from Egypt, Ghana’s Exchequer. Kenya Police and Butali Sugar Warriors will represent the hosts in all categories.
