Local matchmaker, Steve ‘Mawenzi’ Msiska, has called on major stakeholders in domestic boxing to invest in heavyweight boxer, Alick Gogodo.
Gogodo saved the country’s face on Friday after recording Malawi’s only win during international fights in Harare, Zimbabwe.
The Malawian defeated Zimbabwean, Trevor Mpofu, in fashion with a first round technical knockout.
It was Gogodo’s fifth win in six fights. He lost once in Namibia.
His compatriots, Ellen Simwaka and Agnes Mtimaukanena-Mwando, lost miserably to Zambian opponents.
Simwaka suffered a fourth round technical defeat against Barbra Banda in a bantamweight battle whereas Mtimaukanena saw her quest for a World Boxing Council International welterweight belt vanish in thin air after the referee stopped the contest in the third round against eventual champion, Loleta Muzeya.
Msiska, commenting on the trio, said time was ripe for stakeholders to take notice of Gogodo’s talent.
“His performance shows that if supported, he can make it big in the country. He just needs good advice and support to attain his goals. I believe this boxer can help us win reputable titles,” Msiska said.
The matchmaker said it was unfortunate that Simwaka and Mtimaukanena lost their fights.
“Ellen put up a spirited performance but she was up against a very good boxer. On Mtimaukanena, I think she tried her best but I blame her corner-men for deploying a wrong game-plan. Her opponent is a pressure boxer, so they were supposed to develop a technique to counter this,” he said.
