Malawi’s  representatives at this year’s African Union Region Five Games in Maputo, Mozambique won seven medals on Friday.

Held under the theme ‘Celebrating Excellence, Inspiring Innovation”, Malawi collected two gold, three silver and two bronze medals.

Cecilia Luhanga was the overall winner in the women’s 400 metres’ category, while Prisca Kachule also got gold in 400 metres paralympic women’s category.

In the veterans’ men’s contest, Rodwell Kamwendo won silver just like Harry Sichali in the serious runners’ category for men.

Doris Fisher scooped a third silver medal for Malawi in the women’s marathon, whereas Nancy Matanda won bronze in the same category.

Alinafe Puwa earned bronze medal in 400 metres’ category for paralympic athletes.

Malawi National Council of Sports Executive Secretary, George Jana, described the athletes’ performance as encouraging.

“This shows that they are committed and dedicated towards doing well. They have shown their love for Malawi. Most of the athletes are quite young and I believe that we have a great future in the sport,” Jana said.

Athletics Association of Malawi President, Godfrey Phiri, was also happy with the results.

Sichali and Fisher were also winners in their respective categories in local competitions— Ku Chawe Mountain Race and Mulanje Porters’ Race last month.

Kamwendo was also victorious in the contest for veterans during the Ku Chawe Race.
