Junior Queens humbled again

Malawi Under-21 National Netball Team suffered its second successive defeat at the Netball Youth World Cup in Botswana when rivals, South Africa, soundly humbled the Junior Queens 55-32 on Thursday.

Having lost to Zimbabwe 52-23 on Wednesday, it was obvious that Malawi would not have survived against the well-drilled young Spar Proteas.

Unsurprisingly, the Junior Queens trailed South Africa in all the quarters.

South Africa led the first quarter 15-10 and deservedly increased the lead to 30-17 at half-time.

Malawi were completely torn apart in the third quarter when South Africa stretched the lead to 42-24.

The final quarter was an easy one for South Africa, which sealed the victory.

Malawi’s mission to qualify for next year’s Netball World Youth Cup is slowly fading as the likes of South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Uganda have been billed as strong candidates to reach the last-four.

Only best four teams from the continental event will qualify for the world finals to also be held in Botswana.

The Junior Queens have tricky assignments against Uganda this morning and Botswana this evening.

Malawi will complete their group assignments against Zambia on Sunday.

Unlike teams such as South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Uganda and Namibia, Malawi started its preparations late.
