Mzuzu-based pugilist, Felix Mwamaso, was controversially declared the winner against Brian Mwando in an eight-round non-title bout at M1 Centerpoint in Lilongwe on Sunday.

The contest was balanced in the opening three rounds, but Mwamaso increased his tempo in the fourth round, unleashing a flurry of punches and sending Mwando to the canvas.

Mwando, with his wife Agnes Mtimaukanena burying his face in his palms in disbelief, staggered like a drunkard, trying to beat the referee’s 10 seconds count.

Agnes tried to inspire her man with a golden voice near the red corner, saying Brian go! Brian go! but it was too little and too late. Referee Leonard Metazama declared Mwamaso the winner.

It was Mwando’s first loss in five consecutive bouts, having won four, including his recent victory over Charles Misanjo in the middleweight title bout.

After the bout, Mwamaso was happy with a sweet revenge over Mwando, whose record is now six losses and 16 wins in 23 bouts.

“I promised my fans that I would beat him. My preparations were good and I am challenging him for a title bout,” said Mwamaso, who boasts of 17 wins and seven losses in 24 bouts.

Mwan d o ’s c amp said the referee made a mistake by declaring Mwamaso the winner, claiming that the fight was supposed to be declared as a no-contest.

“This is not boxing and we really are saddened by what has happened. Mwamaso committed a serious foul and he was supposed to be punished,” one of Mwando’s trainers said.

In the main supporting bout, Robert Kachiza lost to Yohane Banda on points, whereas Byson Gwayani beat Dickson Saidi in an entertaining bout. The bout between Mudi Kuminga and Alexander Likande ended in a draw.

Host, Don King Boxing Promotions’ Managing Director, Antonio Dzilimbire, was impressed with the turnout.
