Chinese Ambassador, Wang Shi-Ting, has challenged Malawi’s five Rio Olympic Games-bound athletes to win medals at the Brazil event.

Shi-Ting made the challenge when he hosted a send-off ceremony for the Malawi Olympic Team at the Chinese Embassy in Lilongwe on Friday.

Shi-Ting said he was confident that Malawi will do well during the games in Brazil. The games will kick-off on August 6.

“The Olympic Games are one of the most important sporting events in the world. I was told that you are working very hard in the past few years in preparation for this event. What drives you to work hard is your passion for sports and devotion to the country,” Shi-Ting explained.

“Although we cannot join you in this historic event in Brazil, it is indeed a great pleasure that our well wishes can accompany you in this top level competition.”

The Chinese ambassador handed over two laptops and a printer to Malawi Olympic Committee (Moc).

Each athlete travelling to Brazil also received a suitcase from the embassy. The traveling delegation was also provided with a high-end video camera.

In his remarks, Moc General Secretary, Jappie Mhango, hailed the Chinese Embassy for the timely donation.

“We are grateful to the Chinese Embassy for boosting the morale of the athletes ahead of the games in Brazil,” Mhango said.

Speaking on behalf of the athletes, swimmer Brave Lifa promised to work hard and bring medals.

Malawi will be represented by five athletes at the global event. The athletes were expected to leave for Brazil through Kamuzu International Airport yesterday.

Lifa and Amara Pinto will compete in swimming, Tereza Master in a marathon and Kefas Kasten in 10, 000 metres. David Areneo is the only representative for archery.
