The Ministry of Sports and Culture has lauded Limbe Leaf Tobacco Company for sponsoring grassroots football and netball for 36 years.
Chief Sports Officer, Joseph Kayamba, commended the company during this year’s finals at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe on Saturday.
“The company has been a true partner in developing sports in the country. The sponsorship has unearthed many talented players,” Kayamba said.
In her remarks, Limbe Leaf Legal and Corporate Affairs Director, Febbie Chikungwa, said the company was proud to be associated with grassroots sports.
“They [athletes] will carry the competencies and values they learn in sports into the rest of their lives. As Limbe Leaf, we believe that sports can change people’s lives. Whether as a participant or a spectator, people engage in sport in such a manner that it can make a huge difference to health and lifestyles,” Chikungwa explained.
“To the players and students, I urge you to work had in school to avoid the temptation of being engaged as a child labourer. Education is the key to a bright future.”
At the end of the tournament, Mchesi Primary School retained the Under-15 football trophy after beating Tsabango 1-0 in the final, whereas Chiwoko were crowned as Under-12 football champions following a 1-0 victory over Mphandula.
In the Under-15 netball category, Kalambo Primary School won the tournament after defeating M’balang’ombe 21-7, whereas Nankhaka won the Under -12 netball trophy after beating Tsabango 4-3.
The champions received trophies, flip charts and markers.
The players were awarded with school bags, hardcovers, exercise books and mathematical sets.
The company spent K11 million towards this year’s tournament.
