Zambian hockey side, Lusaka Sharks, left Malawi with their heads held high after beating four Malawian teams in the men’s and women’s categories.
The two-day tournament, which ended on Sunday, was held at the Hockey Stadium (formerly Upper Stadium) near the Kamuzu Stadium.
In the men’s category, Sharks finished with 12 points after winning all four games.
Malawi’s top side, Genetrix, finished on second position with six points, whereas Nyala ended on third place with the same number of points.
Scorpions ended on fourth place with three points while Braves anchored the table with the same number of points.
In the ladies’ category, Lusaka Sharks finished with nine points, three ahead of a local select side comprising players from Nyala, Scorpions and Simba.
Genetrix were third with three points, whereas Braves finished at the bottom.
Lusaka Sharks senior women’s player, Esther Mwale, said Malawi has hockey potential.
“They need to improve their fitness and technical understanding of the game. They also need to develop infrastructure. On our part, we struggled a bit because we are not used to a grass surface,” she said.
Genetrix senior player, Geoffrey Biya, said they learnt a lot from the Zambians.
“Sharks won the tournament but we gave them a good run for their money. Previously, we used to lose by huge margins, but now they beat us 2-0, which is on the lower side,” he said.
Hockey Association of Malawi (Ham) General Secretary, Chigo Thindwa, hailed the teams.
