Mzuzu-based boxer, Felix Mwamaso, says he is determined to defeat Brian Mwando during an eight-round non-title rematch on Sunday at M1 Centrepoint in Lilongwe.
The two met early this year during a middleweight bout, with Mwando emerging victorious.
However, despite preparing for the fight, Mwamaso seems to have little knowledge that it is a non-title contest.
“I am ready to get back my belt on Sunday. Mwando should know that I am preparing for him and I am training hard. That belt (middleweight) belongs to the Northern Region,” he said.
Mwamaso made the challenge on Monday during a training session at Mzuzu Stadium.
His trainer, Gabriel Kondowe, said he was optimistic that his boxer would win.
However, Kondowe bemoaned the lack of convenient boxing facilities for training and promotions in the city.
“Here our promoters no longer organise bouts, thereby rendering our boxers idle. However, the idleness will not affect Mwamaso’s fight against Mwando because he has trained hard,” Kondowe said.
Don King Boxing Promotion Managing Director, Antonio Dzilimbire, said they expect a good rematch on Sunday.
“The last time they met, Mwamaso complained that he did not have enough time to train, but now he is prepared up to a point that Mwando was reluctant to fight with him,” Dzilimbire said.
The Northern Region pugilist has 16 wins and seven losses out of 23 bouts.
Mwamaso has been out of action for months, whereas Mwando beat Charles Misanjo in Blantyre a fortnight ago.
