South Africa team courts Joseph Kamwendo

National team seasoned midfielder, Joseph Kamwendo, might make a sensation return to South Africa Absa Premier Soccer League (PSL) following interest from newly-promoted Highlands Park.

South African online football magazine, Soccer Laduma, has reported that Highlands coach, Alan Freese, was impressed with the performance of the Mozambique-based player at the recent Cosafa Castle Cup in Namibia.

“From what the owner of the team in Mozambique said, the newly- promoted Highlands Park are interested in Shakira’s services,” the source told Soccer Laduma about the Liga Desportivo Maputo player.

“It will all depend on what they want and if Highlands Park will afford it. They are looking for $40,000 [K28 million] and that is what they think he deserves but he could be moving to the PSL.”

Kamwendo has 54 PSL appearances to his name, having played for Vasco Da Gama and Orlando Pirates previously.

A source close to Liga Desportivo management confirmed to The Daily Times yesterday about Highlands’ interest in the player. Tanzanian side, Azam FC, have also been eyeing Kamwendo.

“But the team owner [Rafik Sidat] is unlikely to sell him as he wants him to play this season. Of course, if there is a big offer, they will likely sell him,” the source said.

The former Be Forward Wanderers and Zimbabwe’s Caps United star confirmed that while he is viewed as aged in Malawi football circles, there are many potential suitors for him.

“They are talking to my bosses. So let us wait and see what the South African club will agree with my team here. I feel like a 17-year-old. To me age is just but a number. It was not easy to play at TP Mazembe, but the experience I got there has been handy to me,” Kamwendo explained in a telephone interview from Maputo.
