Holders Tigresses started their Rainbow Paints Southern Region Netball League title defence with a comprehensive 108-7 thrashing of Gerald Tasaukadala Sisters at Blantyre Youth Centre on Saturday.

Tigresses, featuring new signing, Beauty Basiawo, were ruthless in attack and resolute when defending.

Seasoned players such as Sindie Simtowe, Ellen Chibokho, Rose Saili and Licy Akidu-Fiwa took turns to torment the Chileka based side.

Tigresses led the first quarter 26-1 before extending the lead to 51-4 at half-time. Despite making several changes, the defending champions easily led the third quarter 82-5.

Tigresses coach Peace Chawinga-Kaluwa said scoring more baskets was part of their game-plan.

“I am delighted with the players. They followed instructions and this is the spirit which we need. I strongly believe that we will defend the championship,” she said.

Gerald Tasaukadala Team Manager, Hilda Makondetsa, said it was a difficult week, but she promised to bounce back.

“We were not at our best. We gave up quite quickly. The season has just started and we will try to fix all the problems quickly. We need to develop the right attitude when playing against big teams,” she said.

In another match, Thunder Queens also started their campaign impressively when they beat Chilomoni Sisters 77- 21.

Key players such as Joanna Kachilika and Esther Kayira led the battle as Thunders trounced Chilomoni.

Earlier on Shizaella beat Young Professionals 54-18.
