Vice-President Saulos Chilima Friday evening hailed members of different rotary clubs in the country for their hard work and commitment to changing people’s lives.
He observed that, among others, Rotarians have provided potable water through the construction of boreholes throughout the country.
He was speaking in Lilongwe at the induction ceremony of Rotary Club of Bwaila President Alex Adamu where he was also guest of honour.
“And I am told that specifically as Rotary Club of Bwaila you have also been involved in many humanitarian projects that include distribution of wheelchairs to people with disabilities.
“I have been informed that some of the hospitals that benefited include Kamuzu Central Hospital and Kapiri Health Centre in Mchinji. I am also aware that currently you are renovating Mbabvi Health Centre,” he said.
Chilima, himself an honorary member of the Rotary Club of Bwaila, added that as minister responsible for disaster management affairs, he is thankful that Rotarians donated various relief items to victims of flood disasters.
“We hope this year you will do the same as we respond to the looming hunger crisis which is a result of the 2015 flood disaster and the dry spell that followed,” he said.
He also challenged Adamu to concentrate on serving communities and the needy, saying one year will be enough for the new president to make his contribution to the club and to mankind.
In an interview after being inducted, Adamu said he will continue from where his predecessor, Patrick Mhango, left for the sustainability of the club.
“I will put in place deliberate measures to ensure we don’t lose membership and gain more members. I will also ensure that the charity work which we do continues,” said Adamu.
