The Malawi National Commission for United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) has donated books and computers worth K40 million to Mzuzu University (Mzuni).

Unesco Executive Secretary, Francis Mkandawire, said the donation aimed to assist the University after its library was gutted down in December last year.

“Unesco believes that a library is a gateway to knowledge which provides a basic condition for lifelong learning, independent decision making and cultural development of the individual and groups. It is a living force for education, culture and information,” Mkandawire said.

Mzuni Vice-Chancellor, Robert Ridley, commended Unesco for the donation, saying the donation meets specifications of the University.

“About three to four days after the fire accident, Unesco approached us asking how they could help. So we gave them the list of books and other materials required,” he said.

Ridley said the University has managed to raise about K700 million through cash, books and other resources like library shelves but still needs assistance.

Mzuni is expected to construct a new library by 2019.
