FMB targets schools in CSR book project

FMB in partnership with Early Grade Reading Activity (Egra) has donated 63,000 books to nine schools under Madziabango education zone.

Egra is implementing a programme with financial support from the United States Agency for International Development which aims at teaching children to read and write.

Speaking when he presented the books on Friday, FMB Head of Alternate Channels and Product Development, Lumbani Manda, said after assessing the results from Egra activities, the bank was encouraged to donate the books.

“We know parents of some of these children work in some of our banks while others bank with us. So, as a matter of appreciation, we decided to give them books for their conducive learning,” Manda said.

Egra Programme Management Specialist, Ramsy Sosola, said the programme has so far benefited 11 districts in the country.

“We want to reach out to all the schools in the country. This is the only initiative that we can bring to the education sector,” Sosola said.

Blantyre District Education Manager Paul Chiphanda said the coming of Egra in the area has improved learning skills among many pupils.

“We are aware that teachers work under pressure but government is working on that. We plead with other stakeholders to emulate what FMB has done,” Chiphanda said.
