Actresses call for support for Flora Suya

Some of the actresses, who have starred in Flora Suya’s latest movie My Mother’s Story, have called on people to buy the original copy of the film.

The call was made on Saturday when Suya screened the movie at M Theatre formerly Cine Cinema at Chichiri Shopping Mall in Blantyre.

Having played roles in Shemu Joyah’s award winning movies Seasons of a Life and The Last Fishing Boat as well as a Zambian film Chenda, Suya has grown her base by producing her own movie.

She premiered the movie in Lilongwe recently before coming down to Blantyre for screening by public demand.

“I just want to thank Flora for a good movie and for giving me a role in the movie. Actually she invited me and said you have been doing radio plays for sometime but now it’s time for you to play a role in films,” said Mirriam Mwazimva, who also plays the role of a maid.

Mwazimva is not a new name for those who have followed radio plays in the country particularly Zimachitika produced by Story Workshop.

“I am happy for her and this just tells you that women can do it in film making. We are not only there to act but we can also direct and produce our own movies. All I ask from people is let’s support her by buying the original DVDs,” she said.

Mwazimva said people should refrain from buying pirated copies as more effort is put in producing a movie.

“There was a lot that was involved in producing the movie, a lot of money was invested and it is only right that we support Flora by buying the original DVDs. If we buy original copies it means Flora will be motivated and move on to work on other movies,” she said.

Mwazimva has since said that people should watch the space as she would want to feature in more films.

“This is just the beginning and I am looking at starring in more films. Again I should say it here that Flora Suya has showed that as women we can do it in film making and has jacked us up,” she said.

Another actress Tapiwa Gwaza, who has starred with Suya in Seasons of a Life, also described My Mother’s Story as a good film.

“I enjoyed playing a role in this movie and I would like to thank Flora for giving me time to star in My Mother’s Story. Flora is a sister to me and to see her produce her own movie is something worthy appreciating. I just call upon people to buy her original DVD,” said Gwaza.

She said women were now taking a huge role in film making pointing out that gone are the days when they were only restricted to acting.

During the premiere, Suya also launched the film’s DVD which she is currently selling alone as she tries to find the right distributors.

The DVDs were on sale at K2,000 during the screening at M Theatre although some of them did not have Copyright Society of Malawi (Cosoma) holograms.

Random interviews with people after the screening, heaped praise on Suya describing My Mother’s Story as a good movie with a good African story.

“It’s a good movie with a lot of lessons and I should say that the country is moving in the right direction as far as movie making is concerned. The industry just needs to be supported,” said one of the fans.

The film centres on a housemaid Tadala played by Suya, who is impregnated by a gardener, who later refuses to take responsibility.

Suya later meets a man, who falls for her and ends up being together but death strikes when Tadala was seeing the light.

She experiences several challenges and in an attempt to educate her daughter she turns into a prostitute.

It is a movie worth watching although there are gaps in sound and picture which could have been improved.

Meanwhile Suya has said she is set to start shooting another movie titled Delayed Destiny to be premiered in December.
