Director of Public Affairs in the Office of President and Cabinet, Grey Mang’anda, has been named acting President of Lawn Tennis Association of Malawi (LTAM).
This follows the suspension of Titani Muwalo as the association’s president following allegations of mismanagement of funds.
Mang’anda, who is also the former Dean of Education and Media Studies at the Polytechnic, a constituent college of the University of Malawi, was serving in the current committee as an executive member.
In his brief response, Mang’anda, who also served the body in the 1980’s, said his immediate task was to restore the association’s battered image.
“We need to put our house in order and get out negative issues. We also have some developmental programmes which we need to carry out,” he said.
LTAM General Secretary, Stan Kaunda, said Mang’anda was a proven leader.
“We believe that his knowledge of the game and administration will help us transform tennis in the country,” he said.
Muwalo was suspended indefinitely for allegedly misappropriating about K3.9 million which the association got from sponsor, Puma Energy, to refund Malawi National Council of Sports.
LTAM had borrowed the money from the Sports Council while waiting for Puma’s funding.
The letter, dated May 13 2016, indicates that Muwalo was suspended for bringing the LTAM and Malawian tennis into disrepute.
Muwalo has since promised to pay back the money which he claims to have used to pay coaches and also send Linda Msisya to South Africa for a tournament.
