The country’s misfiring national football team, the Flames, goes into Cosafa Castle Cup in Namibia as one of the two most defeated sides since the inception of the tournament in 1997.
According to supersport. com, Malawi and Lesotho have lost the highest 17 games each.
But the Flames, who open their campaign against Angola tomorrow, can take solace in the fact that they are on the list of teams with wins in double digits at 10.
Their opponents, Angola, have won 15 matches in the history of the competition.
Zimbabwe and Zambia share four titles each, but in terms of their playing records it is the Warriors who hold the edge over everybody else.
Zimbabwe have been a real power in the Southern African championship despite the fact that it took them four editions to finally lift the trophy.
The Warriors head the all-time Cosafa Cup table with 30 victories from 45 matches, having drawn eight matches and lost seven.
They also lead the goal-scoring stakes with 72 scored and conceded 32 times. Zambia have 24 wins in 45 games. Along with South Africa, the Chipolopolo have lost the fewest number of games – six – among teams who have played in 10 or more games in their history.
Head coach Ernest Mtawali has a full strength squad at his disposal as he faces Angola, Lesotho and Mauritius in Group B of the tournament’s preliminary round. Group winner date seeded South Africa in the quarterfinal.
