As part of its corporate social responsibility, Illovo Sugar Malawi on Friday led communities in Chikwawa district in planting about 8,000 trees in the district at a cost of K 2 million.
Illovo Sugar Malawi Nchalo agriculture manager Keith Domleo said the initiative was aimed at helping communities address concerns on effects of climate change partly influenced by deforestation in most parts of the area.
“We realise that as a company we also suffer from the degradation, so we had to contribute to the protection of the environment,” he said.
Domleo said effects of the degradation range from siltation to low levels of water, which is impacting yields and production of sugar cane at Illovo’s Nchalo estate.
On his part, District Commissioner for Chikwawa, Bester Mandere, commended the company for the initiative, saying it will go a long way in addressing concerns of climate change in the district.
He lamented the dry spell mostly caused by wanton cutting down of trees and the repercussions this has had on crop yields and livelihoods in the district.
