Former stars hijack social tournament

Desperation for success continues to dilute the concept of social football in the country.

This is evidenced by the influx of ex-Super League players in Sports Administrators and Journalists (Saj) Tournament, whose national finals took place in Lilongwe over the weekend.

What started as a social tournament in 2015 in Mzuzu is reportedly slowly losing track.

In view of this, there are calls to rebrand the tournament into Former Super League Players’ Tournament.

For instance, some teams do not even have journalists but feature former Super League players such as Andrew Chikhosi, Dave Moya, Charles Beni, Panganeni Ndovi, Swadick Sanudi, Bothwell Saka and Chisomo Kamlanje.

Over the weekend, Central Region (CR) Socials, led by the likes of Moya and Chikhosi, were crowned champions after defeating rivals Southern Region (SR) Socials 4-1 in the final at Nankhaka Stadium.

CR Socials have won the tournament twice since its inception in 2015. SR Socials were the inaugural winners.

National Organising Committee Chairperson, Ronald Chiwaula, said despite hiccups, the tournament was a success.

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Executive Committee members, Daud Mthathiko and Rashid Ntelera, head SR and CR socials, respectively whereas Fam Second Vice President, Othaniel Hara, leads NR Socials.
