President Peter Mutharika has directed that the late Paramount Chief of the Lhomwe people, Ngolongoliwa, be buried with military honours.

The body of Ngolongoliwa was Monday taken from College of Medicine Mortuary in Blantyre to Mtundawosema, Thyolo District where he is expected to be laid to rest tomorrow.

Speaking when the body of Ngolongoliwa was being taken to Thyolo, Mulhako wa Alhomwe Trustee James Naphambo described Ngolongoliwa’s death as a huge loss to the nation.

“Paramount Chief Ngolongoliwa was the custodian of our culture.

He was always advising us on how to live among ourselves and people of other tribes. I cannot think of a way we can ever replace him,” he said.

Born Laelo Costa Juma on February 18 1950, Ngolongoliwa was elevated to the position Paramount Chief on March 9 2017.

He died on Sunday 2019 at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in Blantyre after a long illness.

A statement from the Office of the President, signed by Chief Secretary to Government Lloyd Muhara, says the funeral ceremony would start at around 12:00 Wednesday, adding that President Peter Mutharika would attend.

Ngolongoliwa is survived by a wife, children and grandchildren.
