The government has said it has concluded drafting the Human Resource (HR) Management in Malawi Bill which would regulate the HR profession in the country.
Currently, as part of the formulation process, the government would, from next month, be engaging stakeholders for their input.
If adopted, the law will help govern the profession and improve its effectiveness.
Principal Secretary in the Department of HR Management and Development, Hilario Chimota, said he expected that the Bill would be tabled in Parliament by January 2020.
Chimota said this in Blantyre on Friday when he graced a dinner and dance for the Institute of People Management (IPM)-Malawi, an HR practitioners’ umbrella body.
“The Bill, once it turns into law, will make the HR profession accountable because the profession will have legislation. It will be a controlled profession,” Chimota said.
IPM-Malawi President, Michel Ndaferankhande, said legislating the profession would facilitate growth and also help promote efficiency among practitioners.
Rating it as a game, changer, Ndaferankhande said, if passed into law, the Bill would make it mandatory for HR professionals to be members of the institute, among other things.
“We are getting very good support from the government. We need to do more consultations and, next month, we would be conducting regional consultations on the bill,” Ndaferankhande said.
The dinner and dance event, which was proceeded by a continuous professional development workshop, was meant to create a forum for IPM-Malawi members to network.
The institute has over 350 paid-up members.
