Malawi national football team has remained stagnant on position 126 in the latest Fifa rankings released on Thursday.

Analysts have attributed the development to the Flames’ failure to qualify for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

Malawi are 33rd in Africa while Senegal are the best team on the continent despite suffering a 1-0 defeat to Algeria in the recent Africa Cup of Nations final.

The Lions of Teranga are ranked 40th in the world.

Tunisia, who lost to Nigeria 1-0 in the third place play-off, are second on the continent while the Super Eagles are third.

The Carthage Eagles are 29th in the world while Nigeria lie 33rd.

Flames Coach Meck Mwase said he remains hopeful that his team would rise once it starts playing competitive games later in the year.

“For us to rise on the Fifa rankings, we need to start playing as many competitive matches as we can. We need to register good results in the forthcoming World Cup and Afcon qualifiers,” Mwase said.
