Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar) students Monday demonstrated at their campus against fees hike.
The students are demonstrating against K420,000 fees hike for generic students—up from K362,500 per academic year—arguing that many cannot afford the new fees.
The students blocked Bunda Road and were involved in running battles with Malawi Police Service officers as they pelted stones on them. The police fired teargas canisters to disperse the students.
One of the students, who opted for anonymity, said the students would continue demonstrating until management reduces the fees.
“We are protesting because the new fees are unreasonably high. We want to finish our education and this new fees structure is a drawback,” he said.
Luanar student representative, Thomas Chafera, said he could not comment on the matter as he was not on campus when the protests took place.
There was no immediate response from Luanar management.
