CHIMPHEPO—You will be advised accordingly

Mangochi District Commissioner, Moses Chimphepo, has shot down Malawi Congress Party (MCP) supporters’ proposal to, today, hold demonstrations demanding Malawi Electoral Commission Chairperson, Justice Jane Ansah’s resignation.

“To protect lives of the demonstrators and property in the district, I am requesting you to postpone the demonstrations to a later date. You will be advised accordingly,” Chimphepo says in the letter addressed to MCP Mangochi District office, dated June 25 2019.

MCP and UTM supporters have been holding protests calling for Ansah to step down over irregularities that marred the May 21 Tripartite Elections.

However, Ansah insists that she would only do so when the Constitutional Court, sitting in Lilongwe, rules that the elections were compromised.

MCP District chairperson, Omar Kaisi, said, initially, they had agreed with the council and police that the march would end at the party’s offices where they would hold a press briefing.

“The DC, the police and all of us agreed that we would proceed with the demonstrations but, 40 minutes later, he called us again saying he had rejected the idea of demonstrations due to security reasons,” he said, adding that they would meet to map the way forward.
