UNDETERED—Protesters in Zomba Tuesday

Some supporters for Malawi Congress Party (MCP), People’s Party (PP) and other concerned people Tuesay held a peaceful protest in Zomba over May 21 presidential election results.

The protesters marched from Chinamwali Trading Centre, along the M3 Road, via Chirunga and Kalimbuka roads, on their way to MCP Eastern Region offices in Zomba.

There was heavy police presence in Zomba City while other security officers accompanied the protesters on the streets.

MCP Eastern Region spokesperson, Geoffrey Mjuda Banda, said staging such protests was their constitution right.

“This has been a peaceful demonstration. We have unleashed our anger over what we think was the manipulation of election results. We say no to Tipp-ex elections and, because the matter is in court, we will wait until the truth is known,” Banda said.

In his remarks, PP director of elections, Lawrence Bisika, said people, through the march, demonstrated their anger over the rigging claims.

Malawi Electoral Commission, through its chairperson Jane Ansah, declared President Arthur Peter Mutharika the winner of the presidential elections seconded by MCP’s Lazarus Chakwera whereas Saulos Chilima of UTM came third.
