Newly formed Farmers Milk Producers Association (Fampa) has vowed to address some of the challenges milk producers are facing in the country.
The organisation’s interim chairperson, Foster Mulumbe, said this on the sidelines of World Milk Day commemoration held on Saturday at Bvumbwe Trading Centre in Thyolo District.
“First, we need to have a good relationship with milk processors who are our buyers. We also need to look into problems that milk farmers experience like low milk quality and, most importantly, we have to create a good link between processors and producers so that, at the end of the day, both parties smile,” Mulumbe said.
Mulumbe challenged farmers to produce quality milk if they are to maximise profits.
Assistant Thyolo District Agriculture Development Officer, Richard Thole, said milk farmers were facing numerous challenges.
“We have noted that most farmers stay in distant places to bulking group points where they deliver their products,” Thole said.
Formed two months ago, Fampa is operating with farmers from Thyolo, Mulanje and Phalombe districts.
World Milk Day is commemorated on June 1 every year and this year’s theme was ‘Taking Daily Farming as Business’.
