Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has said Malawi national football team players would be released to vote during today’s tripartite elections.
The Flames regrouped Monday ahead of the 2019 Cosafa Cup which kicks off in Durban, South Africa, on Saturday.
Fam Competitions and Communications Director, Gomezgani Zakazaka, said 14 out of the 34 players who reported for training are registered voters.
“Of the 14, 10 are players while four are team officials. Eight of the players are Blantyre-based and would be released to vote and then report back for camping immediately.
“The other two players are Chikoti Chirwa, who registered in Zomba, and Charles Thomu, who registered in Dwangwa. Similarly, the two would be released to vote and return as soon as possible,” Zakazaka said.
He said the arrangement was made in recognition of the importance of polls, which take place once in every five years.
Zakazaka said Fam encourages stakeholders to be responsible citizens who should respect all national activities.
“It is important for us to allow every registered citizen, including our players, to exercise their voting rights,” he said.
The Flames were drawn in Group B of the regional tournament alongside Mozambique, Namibia and Seychelles.
