The World Taekwondo Championships commence today in Manchester, England, with Yamikani Guba representing Malawi in the heavyweight category.

National taekwondo Coach, Lovemore Masinga, said Guba would be alone at the event as other athletes— Joseph Phiri and Vester Banda—failed to travel to England on Monday because of visa complications.

Phiri was expected to fight in -68-kilogramme (kg) men’s category, with Banda contesting in 57 kg ladies’ showpiece.

“We had prepared well for this competition but it is sad that we have failed to travel. But the good thing is that Guba is based in Manchester and we would have joined him there. But after our failure to travel, Guba will proceed to represent us there,” he said.

Masinga said their failure to make the trip also means that Malawi would not be represented at the World Taekwondo association’s general meeting.
