The body of Peter Chupa was laid to rest with military honours Thursday.

The burial ceremony, which top government officials and members of various political parties attended, took place at HHI cemetery in Blantyre.

Local Government Minister Kondwani Nankhumwa, who represented President Peter Mutharika, said Chupa was a dedicated person when he served in former president Bakili Muluzi’s administration as Cabinet minister.

“Chupa was a shining example in terms of integrity. When he was a parliamentarian and Cabinet minister, he was diligent. He was a man of integrity; one who loved his country,” he said.

Gerald Banda, a family representative, said they would remember Chupa as a selfless and loving person.

“He was selfless and loving. He was always there at all family occasions, whether in happiness or sorrow. He was a man we all rushed to and he used to assist everyone in need. We will miss him dearly,” he said.

Chupa died on April 15.

He served as parliamentarian for Blantyre City Constituency from 1997 to 2004.

He co-founded National Democratic Alliance with Brown Mpinganjira and later joined People’s Party, which he served as director of recruitment.

Among those in attendance were former presidents Bakili Muluzi and Joyce Banda, retired chief justice Richard Banda and politician Ziliro Chibambo.

The Malawi Defence Force directed the funeral ceremony.
