The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has dismissed reports that it has become so clueless that, in its desperation to find a scapegoat on the killing of people with albinism, it has given its personnel bones of albinos which they are dumping in vehicles of unsuspecting drivers.
The development comes in the wake of social media messages that are making rounds, to the effect that police officers manning road blocks are throwing bones in people’s cars.
The reports have irked MPS, which, through national spokesperson James Kadadzera, has warned that it will crack the whip on those who are fermenting the “false reports”.
“The one who fabricated the malicious allegation has ill motives and intentions to damage the reputation of the MPS for their own selfish interests.
“We are hunting for the person who came up with the fabricated message for the law to take its course. The allegation that police manning road blocks want to implicate Malawian motorists in the keeping of bones of people with albinism is malicious, unfounded and baseless, aimed at only tarnishing the image and reputation of the MPS,” Kadadzera said.
He said police would use the Cyber Security and Electronic Transaction law of 2016 that gives the police powers to arrest anyone fabricating rumours of any nature.
