Police in Nkhotakota District have instituted a man-hunt for 23-year-old Jonas M’bwana, who is suspected of killing 92-year-old Bernard Milius on Tuesday.
Nkhotakota Police Station publicist, William Kaponda, said the suspect assaulted Milius on Tuesday, resulting in death.
“On the day, the suspect, who had been accusing the victim of practising witchcraft, went to Milius’ house where he assaulted him severely before setting his house on fire.
“One of the victim’s grandsons reported the matter to Nkhotakota Police Station. We visited the scene of the crime, where we found that the victim was unconscious. We rushed him to Nkhotakota District Hospital where, unfortunately, he died on arrival at the hospital,” Kaponda said.
Kaponda said postmortem results indicate that the victim died after sustaining head injuries.
The development comes barely six months after an angry mob razed down nearly 32 houses belonging to the elderly who were accused of practising witchcraft.
Milius was from Mdosi Village while the suspect comes from Chimthere Village, both in the area of Traditional Authority Mphonde, in the district.
