Malawi Paralympics Committee (MPC) has expressed excitement after the invitation of one of its female referees to officiate at the 2019 World Para Powerlifting Competition in Lagos, Nigeria.

The referee, Martha Mwamadi, who is at level 3 of world para powerlifting, was invited to be one of the technical officials at the three-day tournament that started on Monday and ended Wednesday.

MPC President, James Chiutsi, said the recognition is great news.

“We are very excited with this development. One of the key priority areas in our constitution is to develop capabilities in our technical personnel. This is in line with our development plans,” Chiutsi said.

“We are proud that we are developing technical staff of international calibre. We want to develop elite athletes whose skills can only be enhanced through the development of elite technical personnel,” he said.

Mwamadi is due to return home today. The female match official and male colleague Cliff Njati, are the only qualified referees for para powerlifting in the country.

Paralympic powerlifting is an adaptation of the sport of powerlifting for athletes with disability.

The sport is governed by the International Paralympic Committee and is open to anyone with a minimum level of disability who can extend their arms within 20 degrees of full extension during a lift.
