Veteran actor and comedian Eric Mabedi, popularly known as Jakobo, left for India Wednesday for a kidney transplant.

Mabedi left through Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe alongside his wife, who will be the guardian and donor of the kidney.

The actor will undergo the kidney transplant at BLK Hospital in New Delhi where treatment will be for 30 days and more.

“We have checked in now and we are almost set to leave.

“I am thankful to the government for the support, I am thankful to Malawians for their prayers and support and again to the media because you made it possible for this support to come,” Mabedi said before departure.

He said earlier before departure that those going to India for medical attention were briefed by the government.

The government stepped in to help Mabedi after Friends of Eric Mabedi, sounded an SOS that the veteran actor was in need of a kidney transplant and that he was in need of K20 million.

Friends of Eric Mabedi targeted last month for the actor to go to India but this was missed as the government was still waiting for feedback from India.

Mabedi is National Theatre Association of Malawi President and also Copyright Society of Malawi Board Chairperson.

He is also director of Kwathu Drama Group and one of its oldest members.
