It is very sad that we call this a country. The truth is that we do not have a country. What we have is, if we are to be honest, an arena where crooks are allowed to play their games without a tinge of remorse and without fear of the law.
In The Daily Times of Friday last week, there was a story that really irked me to the marrow. The story smelt of utter impunity and a dose of uppity that has become a hallmark of political figures.
In the story, six members of Parliament—one being a minister—have decided to disobey the law and refused to declare their assets. Where all this is wrong is that these are holders of public offices and must be held accountable by all means. To them, the law is nothing but just some write ups that can be disregarded with some nonchalant scoff.
But when you read through the details, you are bound to notice that there is an even bigger problem in us. We are a nation that pretends to the world to have morals and decency yet we are just, as one called us, a crooked enterprise.
I am not sure what must be done to us or for us to realise that we are so damned all over. The courts or the useless Anti-corruption Bureau might not have come to the bottom of the issues but it is too clear for all to note that there is something fishy happening.
South Africa went through a similar process when they had the errant Jacob Zuma as president. Zuma, was just one mistake South Africa ever had and it was made worst when he allowed himself to become a Gupta puppet. But South Africans have a history of vigilance and do not tolerate nonsense for long. That is why Msholozi was eventually booted out.
Malawi needs to get serious if at all we have to salvage what remains of our pride.
Last week, it was revealed that a voter registration kit was found on a train railing from Mozambique to Malawi. We are talking about a biometric kit that had voter registration details in it. The details are for people who on May 21 are expected to queue and decide the destiny of the country.
When Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) came in to explain, every individual with the last thread of sanity in the brain could easily tell that Mec is lying and hiding a dose of information.
How do you explain to the world that a machine that has in it sensitive information just disappears like that? It is annoying that this crop of sycophants masquerading as Mec officials have the audacity to come in the public to mumble incomprehensible lines with the hope that Malawians can easily be duped.
Mec explanation—if at all it is an explanation—is a shame and a blooper worst than the stupid narration by the Saudi government when they murdered Jamal Khashogi, the journalist.
All said, I think this country is run like a circus where nothing must be taken serious. Starting from the top, all we are doing is shameful and it is even not a good thing to introduce oneself as Malawian? When you reflect, you are tempted to believe that the way we run this country is just a whole load of rubbish.
