Masters cautious on targeted players

Carlsberg Cup champions Masters Security will have to tread carefully when the next transfer window opens if they are to retain their key players.

Several local teams, including Nyasa Big Bullets, have underlined their intent to sign players from the Central Region outfit, with Nigerian import Babatunde Adeboye featuring highly on the wish-list of the People’s Team.

Other players from Masters are being linked with moves away from the side following its dramatic and historic 1-0 triumph over Nyasa Big Bullets and another sensational 5-4 win over Be Forward Wanderers on their way to Carlsberg Cup glory.

Masters Team Manager Muhammed Selemani said, while it is difficult to hold on to some of their key players, they need to exercise caution in the next transfer window.

“If we are to continue developing, then we need to maintain our squad. The team has shown tremendous improvement and winning the Carlsberg Cup against Wanderers at Kamuzu Stadium underlines our quality. Our victory over Bullets in the semifinal was also not a fluke and we need to maintain the team,” Selemani said.

But he said it is important for the team to balance up by releasing excess baggage and signing good players.

“The decision to buy or sell players does not rest in one person but the entire management. So if the executive decides to sell a player, we will sign an equally good player to ensure that we do not disturb the rhythm and development of the team,” Selemani said.

Masters are one of the most ambitious local teams with several achievements since joining the TNM Super League last season.

One of the rare feats is its participation in the Caf Confederation Cup early this year.
