The United Kingdom-based Pauline Long Entrepreneurship Foundation has embarked on a K50 million women entrepreneurship community centre project in Mzimba Districat.
It seeks to revive the fortunes of widowed women by training them in entrepreneurship.
The building will serve a population of about 300 widows in Kabuwa area.
Speaking during a tour of the project, donor representative Fikelephi Jackson said she was satisfied with progress made since the project commencement date in September. It is expected to be ready by November this year.
“We want women to be actively participating in the country’s development. They will be learning how to knit, among other things, so that they can generate income through product sales. They will, therefore, be able to feed themselves and pay, for example, school fees for their dependants,” Jackson said.
Pauline Long Entrepreneurship Executive Director for Malawi, Ackson Kalaile- Banda, lamented poverty levels among widows in Malawi.
“This area [specifically] has many women who are vulnerable,” Kalaile- Banda said.
Pauline Long Entrepreneurship Foundation opened its doors in Malawi in 2015 when the country experienced prolonged drought which resulted in hunger.
The foundation donated relief items to affected households in Kasungu, Mzimba and Zomba districts.
