Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Samuel Tembenu, has praised the Chinese government for technical and financial support it provides to Malawi.

Tembenu made the remarks in Lilongwe during a reception marking the 69th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

He said development assistance China offers contributes to implementation of “our development aspirations, as stipulated in the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy”.

“It is gratifying to note that relations between Malawi and China have been mutually beneficial since the establishment of diplomatic relations 10 years ago. The milestones achieved in the areas of agriculture, health, trade and investment, infrastructure development, capacity-building and humanitarian assistance have significantly contributed to the improvement of livelihoods of Malawians,” Tembenu said.

Tembenu said time had come for Malawians to learn best practices from the Chinese Economic Model with a view to adapt and apply them where necessary to lift themselves out of the pit of poverty.

Chinese Ambassador to Malawi, Liu Hongyang, said his government would maintain its policy on diplomatic relations, including non-interference in African countries’ pursuit of development paths that fit their national conditions.

“We will maintain our no interference [policy] in African internal affairs;[that is] no imposition of our will on African countries; no attachment of political strings to assistance to African countries; and no seeking selfish political gains in investment and financing cooperation with Africa,” Hongyang said.
