UNITY OF PURPOSE— Fischer (right) stresses a point as Kanyuka (centre) looks on

A senior American official has expressed satisfaction with progress in the ongoing Population and Housing Census.

American envoy responsible for US Census Bureau, Alvin Fischer, said on Tuesday the exercise, which started on September 3, has been conducted professionally.

“Malawians should make sure that everyone participates in the ongoing exercise as this will assist the government and NGOs [non-governmental organisations] plan around their programmes accurately, including activities that target citizens,” he said.

Fischer raised the sentiments during a tour of National Statistical Office headquarters in Zomba.

He also inspected some of the areas where the exercise is taking place.

Commissioner of Statistics, Mercy Kanyuka, said individuals should take the ongoing registration exercise seriously.

“It [data collection] plays a great role in the development of the nation, especially when right figures have been compiled, which aids development planning,” she said.

Malawi conducts census every 10 years and this year’s exercise started on September 3 and ends on September 23.
