Five people have died and three others have sustained injuries in a road accident after the vehicle they were travelling in overturned at Ndembwera, along Karonga–Chirumba M1 Road, Monday.

Among the deceased, two are Malawians and three are Tanzanians.

Karonga Police Station spokesperson, George Mulewa, said the accident involved a vehicle, registration number T539DCW, whose driver is still at large.

“The vehicle was coming from Chirumba Area, heading to Karonga Boma, with eight passengers on board. Upon arrival at Ndembwera, one of the front tyres burst, which resulted in the driver losing control of the vehicle because of speeding. Due to the impact, the vehicle overturned and five passengers died on the spot after sustaining severe head injuries,” Mulewa said.

The dead have been identified as Sofa Kasunda Banda, 50, from Chipyinja Village in Traditional Authority Masula in Lilongwe and McLoud Chabuka, 38, whose full details have not been announced.

The three Tanzanian nationals are Rose Adson Simbeye, 32, from Kyera, Anthony Hamid Muya, 31, from Mbeya and Lameck Bakundwe, 51, from Lungwe area.

Mulewa said the three survivors are from Malawi, Tanzania and Nigeria and are admitted to Karonga District Hospital.

Meanwhile, police has advised road users, especially drivers, to observe traffic regulations to avoid accidents due to speeding.
