Peter Mutharika is in charge—Government

BY SAMUEL KALIMIRA:

Government spokesperson, Nicholas Dausi, has said President Peter Mutharika is still in charge of government affairs despite being in China.

His statement comes at a time Vice-President Saulos Chilima is available.

Dausi said government affairs are controlled by the President and nobody else.

“The President is in China but he is in control, as stipulated in the Constitution. Any government business is on track and well monitored by him,” Dausi said.

He further said Malawians should not be confused with the gesture of the Malawi Defence Force, which gave Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Kondwani Nankhumwa, a guard of honour.

Dausi said this was so because the Mulanje parliamentarian was the senior Cabinet minister available at the event.

Chilima’s spokesperson Pilirani Phiri could not respond our questions on the matter.

But University of Livingstonia Political analyst, George Phiri, observed that, while Mutharika did not leave government affairs in the hands of Chilima, there are indicators that he delegated some responsibilities to ministers.

“There is a probability that he left the task of conducting government transactions to someone else other than the Vice- President,” he said.

Mutharika left the country on august 27 to attend the 3rd Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) which is held in Beijing, China, from September 3 to 4.
