The Malawi rugby national team endured a miserable campaign in Zambia’s Lusaka Sevens Rugby tournament after losing four consecutive games.

The team lost the opening game 61-0 against Blue Bulls before surrendering the second 35-7 to Zimbabwe.

Malawi’s woes continued in the third game with a 51-0 loss to hosts Zambia before enduring a 22-17 defeat to Lesotho. The Malawians were playing their last game as we went to press on Sunday.

In an interview from Lusaka yesterday, assistant Coach Martin Chilakalaka said the team started on a bad note but began to improve as the tournament progressed.

“The results and playing standards got better as the competition progressed. The most disappointing thing was the last game against Lesotho which was 17-17 at one point. The Sothos went on to score with the last play to win the match.

“But we should not focus much on the results because the players did their best. We competed against very strong teams and we have learnt a lot during the tournament. I am sure next time we will do better,’’ Chilakalaka said.

This was Malawi’s maiden participation in the tournament, which ended Sunday.
